Yoga (Yogeswaran Manickam) works in an eclectic range of styles and groups, from the more traditional South Indian classical music of his group Tamil Classics, to the multi-cultural collaborations of his work with the bands Dissidenten, Shivanova and the The Shout. He was the first Tamil vocalist to sing in a major Hollywood movie: Jocelyn Pook’s soundtrack for Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut (1999). His other movie soundtracks include Spike Lee’s 25th Hour (2002) and Brick Lane (2007). Among his major concerts were those featured by BBC Proms, Opening of The Royal Festival Hall, Vienna Festival, Glastonbury, Arts and Ideas festival USA, the opening and closing ceremonies of the European Capitals of Culture, Linz (Austria) and Stavanger (Norway). He has performed at the Womad 'World of Music Arts and Dance' festival and the Festival of Colours in the Czech Republic. Yoga has set the ancient Thirukkural by Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluvar to music in 133 ragas. He promotes peace through original music and thereby unites people while crossing cultural and political boundaries. He supports the process of peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka through his CD and performance project titled Peace For Paradise. His recent work includes singing for multimedia productions including Voices across the world at the Royal Opera House London (2011). |
